Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System This Season.

The Championships court with video review technology

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the ability to question certain decisions made by the chair umpire, mirroring the protocol currently in place at each of the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a year after the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old role of line officials.

Reviewable Decisions

Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can ask for the umpire to review specific situations, including:

  • Whether a ball has bounced twice.
  • If a shot made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player used the review system against his opponent.

Draper admitted it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

The umpire viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for interference, awarding the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. The system was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have the system in place at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the introduction of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have occasionally been uncertain if a shot was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
