White House officials and GOP lawmakers have hailed the enforcement of a 2020 US narco-trafficking indictment, while opposition figures have decried the operation as a breach of the nation's self-determination.
Administration Statements: Celebration and Justification
The US Attorney General stated that Maduro and his wife face charges in a federal court, including conspiracy related to narco-terrorism, drug smuggling, and weapons offenses. "The defendants will soon face the complete wrath of US justice on American soil," the statement continued. It concluded by thanking the president for seeking accountability and saluting the brave military for a successful operation.
"Maduro is not the legitimate leader of Venezuela... Maduro is the leader of a narco-terror cartel... and he is under indictment for pushing narcotics into the America," stated the top US diplomat.
The US Vice-President echoed this position, saying that the president had offered multiple opportunities for resolution but was adamant that drug trafficking must cease. "He is the newest person to discover that President Trump means what he says," the remarks added.
Democratic Backlash: Accusations of Deception and Militarism
In contrast, opposition reaction was swift and scathing. Lawmakers charged the White House of turning an anti-narcotics operation into a government overthrow venture.
One Democratic senator alleged that administration officials had looked the Senate directly, assuring the operation was not about overthrowing a government. "I didn't trust them then and we see now that they blatantly deceived to Congress," the lawmaker stated.
The senator, a former State Department employee, warned that the attack "does not represent power. It's not sound foreign policy. It puts Americans at danger... and it delivers a horrible signal to other powerful rulers." The action would further damage the America's standing and alienate the nation from its friends, the lawmaker added.
Another prominent Democratic voice accused the president of betraying its base by "launching a war of choice." The critic called for a movement against "excessive defense budgets and militarism," pushing for greater focus in domestic issues like jobs, healthcare, and education.

Regional experts noted that the armed action striking sites in and around Caracas constitutes the biggest US military operation in the region in decades.
