Tetris Didn't Succeed at The Game Awards — Another Award Type Could Fix That

Whenever a major prize-giving event approaches, one notices a demand for the addition of new categories to honor unsung work and satisfy the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. So would board games, this being someone's personal cause. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification supporting my request remains most pressing and important of all. Here's the proposal: We need an award type for logic-based games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it’s very subjective, and typically spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession for the industry of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and for games of all stripes to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, and Sports/Racing games. Between them, these award types successfully include many game types, making space possible accommodating various experiences.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Consider three of this year’s best games, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, intense tile-matching from another release, engaging interpersonal challenges in another game. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers released every year lacking appropriate categories during gaming ceremonies, if they accidentally match award groups including Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • A renowned logic title received no recognition for anything in 2014
  • A different innovative game missed out during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game got ignored recently
  • Only a few brain-teasers managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

These are often small games, yet the craft of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games count as the most-played games in the world and have been for an extended period.

The legendary block-stacking game challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones to the art of video games, and engaging with almost every other genre.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate five nominees interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these include experiences without proper classification in important events. Puzzle game makers operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like film action specialists, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting 35 years.
