Advocacy Collective Asserts to Have Scraped Countless of Music Tracks from Spotify

An activist organization has stated to have scraped millions of songs from the popular streaming service and is getting ready to release them publicly.

Possible Impetus for Artificial Intelligence Development

Industry experts noted the apparent data breach could boost AI companies looking for data to develop their models.

A group called Anna’s Archive reported it had obtained 86 million music files from the platform and 256 million entries of metadata such as artist and record names. Spotify, which carries more than 100 million tracks, stated that the leak did not constitute its entire catalog.

“We have identified and disabled the malicious user accounts that engaged in unlawful scraping,” stated a Spotify representative.

The Swedish service, which has more than 700 million subscribers worldwide, added that an investigation into unauthorized access found a third party scraped public metadata and employed illicit tactics to bypass DRM [digital rights management].

Group's Declared Mission and Worries

Spotify does not think the audio acquired by Anna’s Archive has been released yet. Anna’s Archive, which is recognized for offering links to pirated books, said in a blog it wanted to create a ‘preservation archive’ for music.

They claimed the music files accounted for 99.6% of all music streamed to by Spotify users and would be distributed via ‘peer-to-peer networks’, a method of sharing large digital files online.

“Naturally Spotify doesn’t have all the music in the world, but it’s a fantastic start,” commented Anna’s Archive, which describes its purpose as “preserving humanity’s knowledge and culture”.

AI Training and Copyright Debate

A composer and campaigner for protecting artists’ rights, remarked the breached music would probably be used for developing AI models.

“Educating models on pirated data is sadly common in the AI industry, so this stolen music is highly likely to be used instructing AI models,” he said.

The group's website alludes to LibGen, a vast online archive of pirated books that has reportedly been leveraged by Meta to develop its systems.

The co-founder of an AI startup wrote on LinkedIn that individuals of the public could in principle “build their own personal free equivalent of Spotify”. He added it could also enable technology firms to “educate models on contemporary music at scale”.

Intellectual property law has become a battleground between artists, writers and creatives on one side and tech giants on the other.

Government Considerations and Reactions

In the UK, creative professionals have protested against a ministerial suggestion to allow AI companies use protected work without permission unless the rights holder signals. Virtually every respondent to a government consultation on the proposal has supported artists’ apprehensions.

A government minister for technology, research and development told parliament this month there was “little consensus” on the issue, adding that ministers would “use the time to get this right”. The administration has pledged to make regulatory plans on AI and copyright by next year.
